Postdoctoral Research Scholar in Conversational and Multimodal AI
DESCRIPTION
The Department of Computer Science and Engineering at the University of California, Santa Cruz
(UCSC) invites applications for a Postdoctoral Research Scholar. Under the direction of Professor
Ian Lane, the postdoctoral scholar will contribute to the research profile of the university in the
areas of Generative AI and Natural Language Processing, supporting both internally and
externally funded research projects. The successful candidate will be expected to support
graduate students in the Master of Science in Natural Language Processing program offered on
the UC Santa Cruz Silicon Valley campus (https://nlp.ucsc.edu) as a research supervisor and
project mentor.
Applicants who have a strong publication record and have expertise in Conversational and
Multimodal AI, Situated Interaction or Embodied AI are strongly encouraged to apply.
SALARY
Commensurate with qualifications and experience. The posted UCSC salary scales set the
minimum pay based on the individual’s Experience Level, which is determined by the number
of months of postdoctoral service at any institution. See the salary scale titled, Postdoctoral
Scholar-Employee /Postdoctoral Scholar-Fellow / Postdoctoral Scholar-Paid Direct -Fiscal Year. A
reasonable estimate for this position is $65,000 to $75,000.
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
Ph.D. (or equivalent foreign degree) in Computer Science with a specialization in Spoken
Language Technologies.
POSITION AVAILABLE
As soon as possible after initial review of the applications. Ph.D. must be in hand at time of the
initial appointment.
MAXIMUM DURATION OF SERVICE IN A POSTDOCTORAL TITLE
Postdoctoral Scholar appointments are full-time; the initial appointment is for a minimum of
two years, with the possibility of reappointment. Reappointment will be contingent upon
positive performance review and availability of funding. The total duration of an individual’s
postdoctoral service may not exceed five years, including postdoctoral service at any institution.
Under limited circumstances, an exception to this limit may be considered, not to exceed a sixth
year.
